The client wanted a 50-piece gong installation capable of playing a specific musical scale. ProtoBear began by modeling the geometry of each gong and adjusting the shapes so the instruments would resonate at the correct frequencies.
Using simulation and iterative refinement, we tuned the geometry of the gongs to produce the desired frequencies. Once finalized, we created 3D-printed master patterns that were used to produce traditional sand molds, and cast them in bronze at the Colorado School of Mines foundry.
After casting, each gong was individually tuned to its precise frequency. ProtoBear also developed the resonator structures and mounting system needed to support the installation and enhance the sound of the instrument.
